Permanent and Semi-Permanent Seismological Network covering EUROSEISTEST (Aristotle University Thessaloniki - Geophysical Laboratory)

Continuous and precise monitoring of the seismicity of the broader area around the TEST-SITE.

Estimation of the focal mechanism and the basic source parameters of the biggest earthquakes which triggered the strong motion network. Detailed studies of the aftershock sequences occurred in the area after the operation of the TEST-SITE.

Seismological database. Compilation of earthquake catalogues for the period 1981-1998 for the area bounded between 33.0oN-44oN latitude and 18.0oE-30.0oE longitude. The total number of located earthquakes for which information is given in the catalogues for the period 1981-1998 is more than 48,000.

Creation of a data bank of P- and S- wave arrival times. Creation of a data bank with waveform data recorded by the permanent seismologic network from 1981 up to now. Data are stored on CD-ROMS in ASCII and include more than 12,000 events. A major upgrade of the seismologic network is underway.

Real time acquisition (NAQS) and the off-line data analysis (DAN) using advanced software (Nanometrics Inc. Canada) and numerus three-component 24-bit digitizers.

Detailed 3-D studies of the crustal and upper mantle structure at the area of northern Greece applying non-linear inversion techniques of P- and S- wave travel times. Precise relocation of all the events at the broader Mygdonia basin using 3-D velocity model. Attenuation of seismic waves using S- and coda waves. Quality factor Q for different frequencies and travel times.

 

Location of seismologic stations in the area of the Mygdonia basin (permanent network: white triangles, mobile REFTEK stations: yellow triangles) and preliminary results for epicenters of events with M2.5 recorded during the first year of the project.
